Why The Year exists

The wellness journey, and the treat at the end.

Wellness is sold one transaction at a time. A class. A check-in. A trip. None of these things, on their own, change a life. What changes a life is showing up regularly with the same people through the slow stretch of an autumn and a winter, and finishing somewhere worth finishing.

The Year is FitnessBeach's answer to that. September to April. A cohort of about forty people, on one of three paces, all on the same arc. The ActivePace check-in at a partner gym is the on-ramp. The Active Hikes and Mind + Body Sessions are the rhythm. The retreat at La Maison Michelle is the close. You walk the year together. You travel together. You come home together.

The cohort framing is what makes the retreat real. It stops being a holiday you book and starts being something you've earned, alongside people whose names you know.

How The Year actually works.

You don't need to do all five steps to be part of the cohort. The more you show up, the closer Barbados gets — but the door is open in either direction. Switch tracks, miss a month, pick it back up. The point is the year, not perfection.

Already there

Start at your partner gym.

If your gym is on the FitnessBeach ActivePace Partner network, you're already on the on-ramp. The Year is bundled into your existing gym membership — no separate fee, no second account.

If your gym isn't a partner yet, two paths: ask them to consider joining (we'll send them the brief), or enrol as a Year-only member and use a designated facility for the September check-in.

Take the ActivePace check-in.

Once a year, free with membership. Ninety minutes at your partner gym, three components: a fitness assessment with your trainer, a nutrition consultation with a registered dietitian, and a mental-health connection with a counsellor. Culturally informed by design.

The check-in isn't a fitness test. It surfaces what your Year should focus on — what to build, what to ease, what to refer out. The report goes to you, your gym, and (with permission) becomes the brief for any practitioner you're referred to.

If care surfaces

A culturally informed
practitioner on InnaPace.

If the check-in surfaces something that needs ongoing care — a therapist, a registered dietitian, an RMT — the handoff to InnaPace (Culturis's wellness directory) is warm, not a search. Your check-in becomes the brief. The practitioner knows where to start.

This is the closed loop. InnaPace's directory adds the care layer that FitnessBeach can't and shouldn't try to be.

through autumn and winter.

The rhythm of The Year. Active Hikes once a month (free), Mind + Body Sessions every few weeks ($25 Year-member rate, drop-in $35 for non-members). Same faces, real relationships. By December you know your cohort. By March you've made plans together that don't involve a website.

Missed a month? It happens. Pick it back up the next one. The cohort holds.

The treat at the end of the Year

Barbados,
the year's close.

Seven mornings at La Maison Michelle. The villa is yours: pool deck, eight bedrooms, chef on call. The Active and Elders tracks share the week — Active goes for open-water swims and vinyasa at sunrise, Elders takes yin yoga and beach walks. Evenings are shared. Long dinners, long conversations, the cohort intact.

Year members get priority booking and the member rate. Walk-ins fill any remaining seats.

Inside The Year · Three paces

Built for every pace.

The on-ramp is the same — a partner gym, the September check-in. The cadence and content of what comes next shifts to match the body and the season of life. Pick the one that's yours, or start in one and move between them. Track-switching mid-year is allowed.

First time on the trail

The Foundations
track

For members new to a wellness routine, stepping back into one after a break, or starting after a life transition. Slower pace, gentler onboarding, more one-on-one time.

track

For members 60+. Most wellness brands skip this lane entirely. FitnessBeach makes it central. Slower pace, different content, partners focused on cultural elder care.

The Year is built so that if your gym is a partner, it costs you nothing extra to enrol. If your gym isn't a partner, or you don't have a gym, the Year-only membership is the bootcamp pathway — flat annual fee, all programming included.

Things people ask.

If your question isn't here, write to us. We answer real people, not bots, and the answer comes back from Marq, Sheila, or Donovan — not a help desk.

Can I switch tracks mid-year?

Yes. People move between Foundations and Active all the time, in both directions. Elders track is harder to switch out of because of the programming structure, but Foundations → Elders is allowed. Just tell us — we'll adjust your roster.

What if I miss a month?

Pick it back up the next one. The cohort holds. The retreat seat is yours as long as you've completed the September check-in and at least four monthly events between October and March.

Can I bring a friend?

To Active Hikes, always — they're free and open. To Mind + Body, yes at the drop-in rate ($35). To the retreat, friends can come if they meet the cohort minimum (at least the check-in + two events). It's about earning it together, not gatekeeping.

I'm not at a partner gym. Can I still join?

Yes. The Year-only pathway ($420/year) is for exactly this. You'll do the check-in at a designated facility — Aura in Toronto or Champlain Strength in Ottawa for Year 01. Or get your gym to consider partnering, and we'll send them the brief.

Do I have to go to the retreat?

No. About half of Year 01 will choose to. Some take the cohort year for the programming alone and skip the trip. That's a real choice. The retreat is the close of the Year, not a contract.

I'm over 60 but want the Active track. Allowed?

Allowed. Age is the default sort, not the rule. Some 65-year-olds outpace 35-year-olds on the trail. Pick the pace that's yours. Donovan will check in at month two and adjust if it's off.

Can I join mid-year?

For Year 01, enrolment closes at end of September. After that, we hold late joiners for Year 02. The cohort framing only works if people start together. (If you're keen and we have a partner-gym seat unfilled, write — we can sometimes flex.)

What's the refund policy?

Year-only membership ($420) is refundable until the September check-in. After that it's non-refundable but transferable to a partner or friend. Retreat deposits are non-refundable from sixty days out, in line with the villa's booking terms.
